Early Life

Juliette Gréco was born on February 7, 1927, in Montpellier, France, to an absent Corsican father and a mother from Bordeaux. Her childhood was marked by emotional neglect, as her mother often expressed harsh sentiments towards her, leading Gréco to be raised by her maternal grandparents. After the death of her grandparents, she moved to Paris, where she began her artistic journey as a ballerina at the Opéra Garnier. However, the onset of World War II saw her family become involved in the Resistance, and Gréco was imprisoned by the Gestapo at the young age of 16. After her release, she returned to Paris, where her life would take a transformative turn.

Career

Gréco's career as a singer and actress flourished in the post-war years, particularly in the vibrant cultural scene of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. She became known for her emotive performances of songs written by renowned poets and composers, including Jacques Prévert and Jacques Brel. Some of her best-known songs include "Paris Canaille" and "Déshabillez-moi". Over her 60-year career, she released numerous albums, such as "Juliette Gréco chante ses derniers succès" and "Gréco chante Jacques Brel, Henri Gougaud, Pierre Seghers". Her final tour, titled "Merci," began in 2015, marking the end of an illustrious career.

Personal Life

Gréco's personal life was as colorful as her career. She was married three times and had a daughter, Laurence-Marie, who sadly passed away in 2016. Gréco had notable relationships with several prominent figures, including jazz musician Miles Davis, with whom she maintained a lifelong friendship. Despite her struggles, including a suicide attempt in 1965, she remained a resilient figure in the arts, known for her leftist views and support for political causes.

Legacy

Gréco's influence extended beyond music; she inspired many artists and was referenced in works by the Beatles and John Lennon. Her legacy is celebrated in various forms, including a rose named after her and the inauguration of "Place Juliette Gréco" in Paris. Gréco passed away on September 23, 2020, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage that continues to resonate with fans and artists alike.
