Kalafina

Formation

Kalafina, a Japanese vocal group, was formed in 2007 by composer Yuki Kajiura, initially to perform theme songs for the anime series "The Garden of Sinners." The group made its debut in January 2008 with two original members, Wakana Ōtaki and Keiko Kubota, who were part of Kajiura's FictionJunction project. Their membership was confirmed during the first Dream Port concert on April 29, 2008. In May 2008, two additional vocalists, Maya Toyoshima and Hikaru Masai, joined the ensemble, solidifying the group's lineup.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

Kalafina quickly gained popularity, releasing several albums that charted in the top 10 on Oricon, including "Seventh Heaven," "Red Moon," and "After Eden." However, in 2009, Maya Toyoshima left the group, reducing the lineup to a trio. The group continued to thrive, moving to the Sacra Music label under Sony Music Entertainment Japan in April 2017. Despite changes, including Keiko's departure in April 2018, the remaining members, Wakana and Hikaru, continued to perform and release music.

Disbandment and Reunion

Kalafina officially disbanded in 2019, but their legacy continued to resonate with fans. In a surprising turn, the group announced a reunion on October 3, 2024, reigniting interest in their music and performances. Throughout their career, Kalafina has been influential in the anime music scene, contributing to various popular series and films, and their unique blend of pop and baroque styles has left a lasting impact on the genre.
