Katrina and the Waves

Formation

Katrina and the Waves, a British-American rock band, was formed in 1981 in Cambridge, England. The band's roots trace back to earlier incarnations, including a group called the Waves, which featured guitarist Kimberley Rew and drummer Alex Cooper. The Waves did not release any recordings before disbanding, but the foundation for Katrina and the Waves was laid when Rew reconnected with Cooper and joined a pop cover band called Mama's Cookin', which included American vocalist Katrina Leskanich and guitarist Vince de la Cruz. This lineup solidified into Katrina and the Waves, with Leskanich taking on the role of lead vocalist.

Breakthrough

The band gained widespread recognition with their 1985 hit "Walking on Sunshine," which became a defining anthem of the 1980s. Their energetic sound, blending rock, pop, and new wave, resonated with audiences, leading to several successful albums, including "Shock Horror!" and "Katrina and the Waves 2." The group was known for their catchy melodies and vibrant performances, which helped them carve out a niche in the music scene.

Achievements and Disbandment

In 1997, Katrina and the Waves achieved a significant milestone by winning the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Love Shine a Light." This victory marked a high point in their career, showcasing their enduring appeal. However, the band disbanded in 1999 after nearly two decades of making music together. Despite their breakup, the legacy of Katrina and the Waves continues to influence pop and rock music, with their songs remaining popular in various media.
