Formation and Early Years

L'Arc-en-Ciel, a prominent Japanese rock band, was formed in February 1991 in Osaka by bassist Tetsuya and vocalist Hyde. The original lineup included guitarist Hiro and drummer Pero, but after a year, both left the band, leading Tetsuya to recruit Ken as the new guitarist in 1992 and Sakura as the drummer in 1993. Their debut album, "DUNE," released on April 1, 1993, was a significant success, topping the Oricon indies charts and paving the way for their major label debut with Sony Music in 1994, which included the album "Tierra."

Major Success and Lineup Changes

The band's popularity soared with subsequent releases, including the million-selling album "True" in 1996. However, in February 1997, drummer Sakura faced legal issues that led to his departure later that year. He was replaced by Yukihiro in January 1998, solidifying the current lineup of L'Arc-en-Ciel, which has remained intact since then. The band transitioned from their visual kei roots to a broader rock sound, achieving immense commercial success and critical acclaim.

Legacy and Influence

With over 40 million records sold, L'Arc-en-Ciel is one of Japan's best-selling music artists. Their albums "Ark" and "Ray," released simultaneously in 1999, are among the best-selling albums in Japanese history. In 2012, they made history as the first Japanese act to headline Madison Square Garden, showcasing their international appeal. The band's influence extends to many contemporary artists, with numerous musicians citing L'Arc-en-Ciel as a significant inspiration in their careers.
