Lars Ulrich

Early Life

Lars Ulrich was born on December 26, 1963, in Gentofte, Denmark, into an upper-middle-class family. His father, Torben Ulrich, was a tennis player, and his mother, Lone, played a significant role in his upbringing. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, Ulrich was exposed to music early on, with saxophonist Dexter Gordon as his godfather. A pivotal moment in his life occurred in February 1973 when he attended a Deep Purple concert at the age of nine, which ignited his passion for music and led him to acquire his first drum kit from his grandmother at around 12 or 13 years old.

Career

In 1981, Ulrich moved to California, where he met James Hetfield, and together they formed the iconic heavy metal band Metallica. The band quickly gained recognition, with Ulrich becoming known for his pioneering thrash drum beats featured in early hits like "Metal Militia" and "Battery." Over the years, he adapted his drumming style, moving from aggressive thrash beats to a more simplified approach in the 1990s, before returning to his roots in later albums like "Death Magnetic" and "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct." Ulrich also ventured into running a record label, though it ultimately folded in 2002.

Personal Life

Ulrich's personal life has seen him through two marriages and several high-profile relationships. He was first married to Debbie Jones in 1988, but they divorced two years later. His second marriage to Skylar Satenstein lasted from 1997 to 2004, and they had two sons together. He later dated Danish actress Connie Nielsen and married American fashion model Jessica Miller in 2015. Residing in San Francisco, Ulrich is passionate about fine art and has made significant sales in the art world. He has also been open about his struggles with tinnitus, a condition he developed from years of touring without hearing protection. Despite his fame, Ulrich remains grounded, often unwinding with jazz music after performances.
