Helena Hubertina Johanna "Lenny" Kuhr was born on February 22, 1950, in the Netherlands. She began her artistic journey in 1967, performing songs influenced by the French chanson tradition. Her unique style and talent quickly garnered attention, leading her to represent the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 1969 with her song "De troubadour," which she co-wrote. This performance marked a significant milestone in her career, as she was one of the four winners that year.

Career

In the early 1970s, Lenny Kuhr found greater success in France, touring with renowned artist Georges Brassens and achieving a top 10 hit with "Jesus Christo" in 1971. Her career continued to flourish, and in 1980, she had her biggest hit in the Netherlands with "Visite," a collaboration with the French group Les Poppys. Throughout her career, Kuhr has released numerous albums, including "Dromentrein," "Stemmen in de nacht," and "Het beste van Lenny Kuhr," showcasing her versatility as a singer-songwriter. Notably, she recorded the song "Shalom from Holland" during the Gulf War in 1991, expressing solidarity with the Israeli people.

Personal Life

Lenny Kuhr's personal life has been marked by significant events, including a traumatic assault in 1973 that led to her conversion to Judaism after marrying the Israeli doctor who treated her. The couple had two daughters before divorcing a year later, prompting her return to the Netherlands. Kuhr later had a long-term relationship with songwriter Herman Pieter de Boer and remarried in 2003. In recent years, she has expressed her views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly in light of her grandson's military service during the Gaza war. In 2026, she announced plans to retire from performing and emigrate to Israel, citing concerns over rising antisemitism in the Netherlands.
