Linda Martin

Early Life

Linda Martin was born in Belfast in 1952, with a rich heritage that includes Irish, Scottish, and Italian ancestry. Her family's surname was originally Martini, tracing back to her paternal great-grandfather, Francis Martini, who immigrated from Italy. Growing up in east Belfast, Martin developed a passion for music and animals, which would shape her future endeavors.

Career

Martin's musical journey began in 1969 when she joined the band Chips in Omagh. The group quickly rose to prominence in Ireland's live music scene, releasing several hit singles in the 1970s, including "Love Matters" and "Goodbye Goodbye." After a brief stint with another group, Lyttle People, she rejoined Chips and continued to perform with them throughout the 1980s. Despite multiple attempts, Chips did not achieve success in the UK charts, but Martin's persistence paid off when she won the Castlebar Song Contest in 1983 with "Edge of the Universe."

Her most notable achievement came in 1992 when she won the Eurovision Song Contest representing Ireland with her hit song "Why Me?" This victory marked the beginning of a historic era for Ireland, as it was the first of three consecutive wins for the country. Martin has participated in the National Song Contest a record nine times, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in Irish music.

Personal Life

Beyond her music career, Martin has been involved in various personal pursuits. She was in a long-term relationship with musician Paul Lyttle from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. In addition to her artistic endeavors, she operates a dog sanctuary in north Dublin, reflecting her lifelong love for animals. Recently, in February 2025, she announced that she had been approached by a political party to run in the upcoming Irish presidential election, showcasing her diverse interests and commitment to public service.
