Formation
Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1984 by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (known as "Euronymous"), bassist and vocalist Jørn Stubberud ("Necrobutcher"), and drummer Kjetil Manheim. The band took their name from a song by Venom and initially performed covers of bands like Black Sabbath and Motörhead. They soon began writing their own music, drawing inspiration from various metal and punk bands, and recorded their first demo, "Pure Fucking Armageddon."

In 1987, Mayhem released their first EP, "Deathcrush," featuring lead vocalist Maniac, who joined the band in 1986.
