Early Life

Michael Bolotin, known professionally as Michael Bolton, was born on February 26, 1953, in New Haven, Connecticut. Growing up in a politically active family, with his father serving as a local Democratic official, Bolton showed musical talent early on, playing the saxophone by age 7 and writing songs by age 9. At 14, he formed a band called the Nomads, which led to a contract with Epic Records when he was just 16. With his parents' support, he left home at 15 to pursue music full-time, even taking odd jobs, including babysitting for Paula Abdul.

Music Career

Bolton's music career began in earnest in the mid-1970s, initially focusing on hard rock with his band Blackjack. He recorded his first album under his birth name, Bolotin, and gained recognition as a songwriter, co-writing the hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" for Laura Branigan. After anglicizing his name to Bolton, he transitioned to pop rock, achieving major success with albums like "Soul Provider" and "Time, Love & Tenderness." His powerful voice and emotive ballads earned him multiple Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life and Legacy

Bolton identifies as a "rebel Jew" and was raised in a household that celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas. He has been a vegetarian since 1970 and published an autobiography in 2013 titled "The Soul of It All: My Music, My Life." In 2024, he underwent emergency surgery for a brain tumor, which he reported was successful. Despite the challenges, Bolton remains hopeful and continues to inspire fans with his music and resilience. He currently resides in Westport, Connecticut, and has a rich legacy as a versatile artist who has influenced many in the music industry.
