Biography
Formation and Early Years
Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR) is a Danish soft rock band formed in 1988 in Aarhus, Denmark. The band was initiated by singer Jascha Richter, who sought to create a group to perform his original songs. He enlisted his high school friend and drummer Kåre Wanscher, and soon after, guitarist Mikkel Lentz joined the fold. To complete their lineup, they recruited Søren Madsen, who played bass guitar despite not being an obvious choice for a pop band. The name "Michael Learns to Rock" was hastily chosen for a demo tape intended for a local competition, inspired partly by a line from Richter's English textbook and partly as a playful nod to Michael Jackson.
Career Highlights
MLTR quickly gained traction, recording their self-titled debut album, which showcased their signature soft rock sound characterized by straightforward lyrics and catchy melodies. Over the years, they released several successful albums, including "Colours," "Played on Pepper," and "Nothing to Lose." The band has sold over 11 million records globally, with a significant portion of their success stemming from their popularity in Scandinavia and Asia. Despite being Danish, MLTR primarily performs in English, which they credit for their broad appeal.
In 2000, the band experienced a lineup change when original member Søren Madsen departed. The current lineup consists of Jascha Richter, Mikkel Lentz, and Kåre Wanscher. Their music continues to resonate with fans, and they remain a beloved act in the soft rock genre, known for hits like "25 Minutes" and "That's Why You Go Away."
