Formation
My Chemical Romance was formed on September 12, 2001, in New Jersey by lead vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier. The band's inception was heavily influenced by the tragic events of September 11, which prompted Way to pursue music as a means of expression. The name "My Chemical Romance" was suggested by Mikey Way, Gerard's younger brother, inspired by a book title he encountered while working at Barnes & Noble.
