Ray Toro

Early Life

Raymond Toro was born on July 15, 1977, in Kearny, New Jersey, to a family of Puerto Rican-Portuguese heritage. Growing up in a modest home with his parents and two brothers, he developed an interest in music during his high school years. Influenced by various bands introduced to him by his brother, Toro took guitar lessons and even pursued typing lessons to enhance his dexterity. He played in several local bands, most notably The Rodneys, which released an album in 1997. After high school, Toro briefly shifted his focus to film, enrolling in an editing course at William Paterson University, while still engaging in music through a band called Dead Go West.

Music Career

Toro's music career took a significant turn when he was introduced to Gerard Way in the late 1990s, leading to the formation of My Chemical Romance. As the lead guitarist and backing vocalist, he became known for his dynamic guitar style, drawing comparisons to Queen's Brian May. His contributions to the band included the #SINGItForJapan project, which raised funds for victims of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Toro's artistry is characterized by his shred guitar playing, influenced by legends like Randy Rhoads and classical guitarists such as Andrés Segovia.

Personal Life

In November 2008, Toro married his wife Christa during a break from My Chemical Romance's busy schedule. The couple has two sons, born in September 2012 and April 2016. Despite his success, Toro remains grounded, often reflecting on his musical journey and the influences that shaped his career.
