Biography

Early Life

Natalie Maria Cole was born on February 6, 1950, in Los Angeles, California, to the legendary singer and jazz pianist Nat King Cole and former Duke Ellington Orchestra singer Maria Hawkins Ellington. Growing up in the affluent Hancock Park district, she was surrounded by music and influential figures in the industry, which shaped her artistic development. Cole began singing at a young age, performing on her father's Christmas album, "The Magic of Christmas," and later started her own band, Black Magic, after graduating high school.

Career

Cole's music career took off in the mid-1970s with the release of her debut album, "Inseparable," in 1975. The album featured the hit single "This Will Be," which won her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, making her the first African-American recipient of the award. Throughout her career, she released numerous successful albums, including "Natalie," "Unpredictable," and "Unforgettable: With Love," showcasing her versatility across genres such as pop, soul, and funk. Cole's powerful voice and emotional delivery earned her critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Personal Life

Natalie Cole was married three times, first to Marvin Yancy, with whom she had a son, Robert Adam Yancy. She later married record producer Andre Fischer and Bishop Kenneth Dupree. Cole faced significant personal challenges, including a battle with drug addiction, which she candidly discussed in her autobiography, "Angel on My Shoulder." Despite these struggles, she remained active in her music career and philanthropic efforts until her passing in 2015.
