Formation

New Kids on the Block, an American vocal group from Dorchester, Massachusetts, was formed in 1984. The group was initially conceived as a boy band by Maurice Starr, who sought to create a white counterpart to the successful R&B group New Edition. The original lineup began with Donnie Wahlberg, who was later joined by his brother Mark, though he left shortly after. Donnie then recruited his friends Jamie Kelly, Jordan Knight, and Danny Wood. Eventually, Joey McIntyre was brought in to complete the lineup after a search for a lead singer.

Breakthrough

The group, originally named Nynuk, changed their name to New Kids on the Block at the request of their record label, Columbia Records. They achieved significant success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with their self-titled debut album and the follow-up, "Hangin’ Tough," which solidified their place in pop music history. The group sold over 80 million records worldwide and won multiple awards, including two American Music Awards in 1990 for "Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, or Group" and "Favorite Pop/Rock Album."

New Kids on the Block are often credited with paving the way for future boy bands like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.
