Coleman married poet Jayne Cortez in 1954, and they had one son, Denardo, born in 1956. The couple divorced in 1964. He passed away on June 11, 2015, in Manhattan at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence jazz musicians today. His funeral was a testament to his impact, featuring performances and tributes from many of his collaborators and contemporaries.
