Early Life

Patrick Benguigui, known professionally as Patrick Bruel, was born on May 14, 1959, in Tlemcen, Algeria, to a family of Algerian Sephardic Jewish descent. His parents separated shortly after his birth, and he was raised by his mother, who emigrated with him to France in June 1962, just before Algeria gained independence. They settled in Argenteuil, where his mother worked as a teacher. Initially aspiring to be a football player, Bruel's passion shifted to music after witnessing the performance of singer Michel Sardou in 1975.

Career

Bruel's career began in acting, with his first notable role in the 1979 film "Le Coup de sirocco." He balanced his acting career with music, releasing his first single, "Vide," in 1982, which did not achieve success. However, his follow-up single, "Marre de cette nana-là," became a hit. His 2002 album, "Entre Deux," featuring collaborations with renowned artists like Charles Aznavour and Jean-Jacques Goldman, sold two million copies, making him the highest-paid singer in France that year. Bruel also made headlines for his philanthropic efforts, notably writing a song to benefit the Red Cross after the 2004 tsunami.

Personal Life

In 2003, Bruel changed his name to Bruel-Benguigui before the birth of his first child with writer Amanda Sthers, whom he married in 2004. They had a second child in 2005 but separated in 2007. Bruel has also made a name for himself as a professional poker player, winning a World Series of Poker bracelet in 1998. However, his personal life faced turmoil in the 2020s, with multiple allegations of sexual assault leading to his departure from the charity ensemble Les Enfoirés in 2026 and the cancellation of many public performances.

Despite these challenges, Bruel remains a significant figure in French music and culture, known for his contributions to both the arts and philanthropy.
