Procol Harum

Formation

Procol Harum was formed in 1967 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, by former members of the band The Paramounts, including frontman Gary Brooker. After the Paramounts disbanded, Brooker teamed up with lyricist Keith Reid, and together they sought to create a band that would perform their original songs. The initial lineup included drummer Barrie "B.J." Wilson, bassist David Knights, and organist Matthew Fisher, who joined after responding to an advertisement. The group quickly solidified their sound, blending rock with classical influences, which would become their signature style.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough came with the release of their iconic single "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in 1967, which became a massive hit and is one of the few singles to have sold over 10 million copies. This success was followed by a series of acclaimed albums, including "Shine On Brightly" and "A Salty Dog," showcasing their unique blend of progressive rock, art rock, and baroque pop. Over the years, Procol Harum experienced several lineup changes, with notable members including guitarist Robin Trower and organist Matthew Fisher, who both contributed significantly to the band's sound during their respective tenures.

Legacy

Procol Harum continued to release music and tour until their disbandment in 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy of innovative music that influenced countless artists in the rock genre. Their ability to fuse classical elements with rock music set them apart and paved the way for future progressive rock bands.
