Early Life

Rebecca Renee Black was born on June 21, 1997, in Irvine, California, to John Jeffery Black and Georgina Marquez Kelly, both veterinarians. Her mother is a Mexican immigrant, while her father has English, Italian, and Polish roots. Black attended private school until the sixth grade, after which she transferred to a public school due to bullying. It was here that she discovered her passion for music through the school's musical theater program. In April 2011, she decided to drop out of school to pursue her music career full-time, citing struggles with her English class due to her busy schedule.

Career

Rebecca Black's career took off in 2011 when she released her debut single "Friday," produced by ARK Music Factory. The music video, uploaded to YouTube on February 10, 2011, initially garnered only a few views but went viral shortly after, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Despite its polarizing reception, with many critics labeling it as one of the worst songs ever, "Friday" peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2026. Following this, she released a follow-up single, "Saturday," which also achieved commercial success. Over the years, Black has continued to evolve as an artist, releasing several EPs and singles, including "My Moment," "Person of Interest," and "The Great Divide."

Personal Life

In addition to her music career, Black has been open about her personal struggles, including depression stemming from the backlash of her early work. On April 3, 2020, she came out as queer during a podcast, later identifying as bisexual and pansexual.
