Regine Velasquez

Early Life

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez was born on April 22, 1970, in Tondo, Manila, to Teresita and Gerardo Velasquez. Growing up in a musical family, she was inspired by her father's lullabies and her mother's guitar and piano playing. By the age of six, she began singing and underwent unique vocal training with her father, which involved immersion in the sea to strengthen her lungs. Velasquez's talent was evident early on, as she placed third in her first singing competition at a young age. At fourteen, she won the television talent show Ang Bagong Kampeon, which launched her career.

Music Career

Velasquez's professional journey began in 1986 when she initially recorded under the name Chona. However, it was her debut album, "Regine," released in 1987 under Viva Records, that marked her rise to fame. The album featured hits like "Kung Maibabalik Ko Lang" and "Isang Lahi." She gained international recognition after winning the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in 1989. Over the years, she released numerous successful albums, including "Nineteen 90," "Reason Enough," and "R3.0," showcasing her versatility in pop and adult contemporary music. Velasquez is celebrated for her powerful vocal range and belting technique, making her a prominent figure in Philippine music.

Acting Career

In addition to her music, Velasquez has made significant contributions to film and theater. She debuted in the 1988 comedy film The Untouchable Family and later starred in various romantic comedies, including Wanted: Perfect Mother and Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw. Her performances in musical theater, particularly in Noli Me Tángere, further solidified her status as a multifaceted artist. Velasquez's ability to connect with audiences through both music and acting has made her a beloved icon in Philippine entertainment.
