Early Life

RuPaul Andre Charles was born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California, to Ernestine "Toni" and Irving Andrew Charles, both of whom hailed from Louisiana. Growing up in a challenging environment marked by poverty and family strife, RuPaul's early life was tumultuous, particularly after his parents divorced in 1967. He and his three sisters were raised by their mother, who had a volatile temperament. RuPaul dropped out of high school in the 10th grade but later moved to Atlanta with his sister to pursue performing arts, which set the stage for his future career.

Career

RuPaul's career began in the 1980s, where he struggled as a musician and filmmaker. He gained initial recognition on the Atlanta public access show "The American Music Show" and performed at local clubs. His big break came in 1989 when he appeared in the music video for The B-52s' "Love Shack." The early 1990s saw him rise in the New York City club scene, where he became known for his gender-bending performances. RuPaul's music career took off with the release of his debut album, "Supermodel of the World," which solidified his status as a pop icon. He later produced and hosted the reality competition series "RuPaul's Drag Race," earning numerous accolades, including 14 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Personal Life

In 1994, RuPaul met painter Georges LeBar at a nightclub, and they married in January 2017. The couple maintains an open marriage and splits their time between Los Angeles and a large ranch in Wyoming. RuPaul has been open about his political views, endorsing Democratic candidates and discussing the political nature of drag. After overcoming substance abuse issues in 1999, he has remained sober and has used his platform to advocate for various causes, including environmental awareness. RuPaul's influence extends beyond music and television, as he has been recognized as a cultural icon and was included in Time's 100 most influential people in 2017.
