Sandara Park

Early Life

Sandara Park, also known mononymously as Dara (다라), was born on November 12, 1984, in Busanjin District, Busan, South Korea. Her name, which means "wise and clever," is inspired by the childhood nickname of the 7th-century general Kim Yu-sin. Growing up, she had two siblings: Thunder, a former member of the K-pop group MBLAQ, and a younger sister named Durami. In 1994, her family moved to the Philippines in search of better opportunities, where she initially struggled with the language barrier but worked hard to improve her Filipino pronunciation, driven by her dream of becoming a celebrity.

Career

Sandara's rise to fame began in 2004 when she participated in the ABS-CBN talent show Star Circle Quest, finishing as a runner-up. This success led to a contract with ABS-CBN's talent agency, Star Magic, and a flourishing acting career, including films like Bcuz of U and Can This Be Love. In addition to acting, she ventured into music, releasing her self-titled album, which became a commercial success in the Philippines. In 2009, she returned to South Korea and debuted as a member of the K-pop group 2NE1, which gained international acclaim and solidified her status as a prominent figure in the K-pop industry.

Personal Life

In 2011, during a promotional visit with 2NE1, Sandara experienced the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. She was rescued by her bandmate CL after managing to contact her from their hotel. Sandara has also served as a cultural ambassador, hosting the Philippines-South Korea state dinner in 2018 and being recognized for her contributions to fostering friendship between the two countries. Her journey from a young girl with dreams in Busan to a celebrated artist in both the Philippines and South Korea showcases her resilience and talent in the entertainment industry.
