Savage Garden

Formation

Savage Garden, an iconic Australian pop rock duo, was formed in 1994 in Brisbane, Queensland, by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones. The duo emerged from a previous band called Red Edge, which included Daniel's brother Oliver and other members. After placing an ad in a local publication, Hayes joined the group, and together with Jones, they began writing original material. Initially performing under the name Crush, they later changed their name to Savage Garden, inspired by a phrase from Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles."

Breakthrough

The duo achieved international fame with their debut album, "Savage Garden," released in 1997, which featured hit singles like "I Want You," "To the Moon and Back," and the chart-topping ballad "Truly Madly Deeply." Their unique blend of pop and rock resonated with audiences worldwide, leading to significant commercial success. Their follow-up album, "Affirmation," released in 1999, continued this trend, producing hits such as "I Knew I Loved You" and "Crash and Burn."

Disbandment and Legacy

Despite their success, Savage Garden disbanded in 2001 after a brief but impactful career. They left a lasting legacy in the music industry, recognized for their contributions to pop music. In 2009, they were honored as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland, and in 2020, they were ranked as one of the "50 Greatest Australian Artists of All Time" by Rolling Stone Australia. Their music continues to influence new generations of artists and fans alike.
