Shocking Blue

Formation

Shocking Blue was formed in 1967 in The Hague, Netherlands, by guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, alongside members Fred de Wilde, Klaasje van der Wal, and Cor van der Beek. Initially, the band had a sound reminiscent of a blend between The Beatles and Brothers Four, achieving a minor hit in 1968 with "Lucy Brown is Back in Town." However, the lineup changed when De Wilde left to join the Dutch army, leading to the introduction of Mariska Veres as the new lead vocalist.

Breakthrough

With Veres at the helm, Shocking Blue recorded their most famous track, "Venus," which debuted in the Netherlands in July 1969 and quickly climbed the charts, eventually reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. This song became a defining hit for the band, selling over five million copies worldwide and earning a gold record in the U.S. Other notable songs from this era included "Send Me a Postcard" and "Long and Lonesome Road."

Legacy

Shocking Blue disbanded in 1974 after selling approximately 13 million records, making them one of the most successful bands of the Nederbeat movement alongside Golden Earring and the George Baker Selection. Their influence is still felt today, particularly through their iconic hit "Venus," which remains a staple in rock music history. The band's unique sound and international success helped pave the way for future Dutch rock acts, solidifying their place in music history.
