Skillet

Formation

Skillet is an American Christian rock band that originated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1996. The band was formed by John Cooper, who had previously been the vocalist for the progressive rock band Seraph, and Ken Steorts, a former guitarist for Urgent Cry. Their initial collaboration was encouraged by their pastor, who suggested they create a band as a side project. The name "Skillet" was chosen humorously, reflecting the diverse musical influences of its members, akin to tossing various ingredients into a skillet. The band quickly gained attention, releasing their self-titled debut album in October 1996, which was well-received and helped them establish a foothold in the Christian music scene.

Breakthrough and Evolution

Following their debut, Skillet released several albums, including "Hey You, I Love Your Soul" in 1998 and "Invincible" in 2000. The lineup evolved over the years, with Korey Cooper joining in 1999, and later members like Lori Peters and Ben Kasica contributing to the band's sound. Skillet's music style has been described as a fusion of Christian rock, hard rock, and alternative metal, with their albums "Collide" and "Comatose" earning Grammy nominations. The band achieved significant commercial success, with albums like "Awake" and "Unleashed" being certified Gold and Platinum by the RIAA.

Legacy

Skillet has made a lasting impact on the Christian rock genre, with their song "Monster" becoming one of the biggest digital singles in Christian music history, achieving over 3 billion global audio streams. The current lineup includes John Cooper, Korey Cooper, Jen Ledger, and Seth Morrison, who continue to push the boundaries of their music while maintaining their Christian roots. With a total of twelve studio albums and numerous accolades, Skillet remains a prominent force in the music industry, known for their energetic performances and powerful lyrics.
