Early Life

Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor was born on April 10, 1979, in Isleworth, London, to Janet Ellis, a presenter on BBC's children's television programs, and Robin Bextor, a film producer and director. Her parents separated when she was just four years old. Growing up, Sophie occasionally appeared on her mother's show, Blue Peter, and attended St Stephen's School and the independent Godolphin and Latymer School. At the age of 13, she began performing with the W11 Opera children's opera, which she continues to support as a patron. Despite her early exposure to the entertainment industry, Sophie has expressed that she did not see herself as conventionally attractive, which she believes allowed her to focus on her talent rather than her looks.

Career

Ellis-Bextor's musical journey began in 1996 as the lead vocalist of the indie rock band theaudience. The band released several singles, including UK Top 40 hits, and a self-titled album before disbanding in 1999. Following this, she collaborated with Italian DJ Spiller on the hit single "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" in 2000, which topped the UK charts and won multiple awards. This marked the beginning of her successful solo career, leading to the release of several albums, including "Read My Lips," "Shoot From the Hip," and "Wanderlust." Her music blends pop, disco, and electronic influences, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Personal Life

In 2002, Sophie met her husband, Richard Jones, the bassist of the band The Feeling, during an audition for her tour band. They married in 2005 and have five sons together. Sophie has been open about her struggles with pre-eclampsia during her pregnancies, which resulted in premature births. She is actively involved in charitable work, serving as an ambassador for organizations focused on premature birth and children's welfare. In addition to her music career, she has also engaged in political advocacy, endorsing Change UK during the 2019 European Parliament election.
