Early Life

Susan Kay Quatro, known as Suzi Quatro, was born on June 3, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in a musical family, her father, Art, was a semiprofessional musician, which influenced her early interest in music. Quatro was inspired by Elvis Presley at the age of six and later drew influence from Billie Holiday and Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las. She received formal training in classical piano and percussion, and her first instrument was the bongos. Quatro taught herself to play the bass guitar, which would become her signature instrument.

Career

Quatro's career began in the 1960s when she joined her sister Patti's all-female band, the Pleasure Seekers, where she adopted the stage name Suzi Soul. The band gained local fame in Detroit, recording several singles. However, it was in the 1970s that Quatro achieved international success with hits like "Can the Can" and "Devil Gate Drive," both reaching number one in multiple countries. Known for her energetic performances and distinctive style, she became a pioneer for female rock musicians, blending pop and glam rock genres. Over the years, she released numerous albums, including "Suzi Quatro," "Your Mamma Won’t Like Me," and "If You Knew Suzi…".

Personal Life

Quatro married her guitarist, Len Tuckey, in 1976, and they had two children before divorcing in 1992. She later married German concert promoter Rainer Haas in 1993. Quatro has lived in England since 1971 and became a British citizen in early 2026. Despite her success, she faced challenges, including a serious injury in 2012 that forced her to cancel performances. Quatro remains active in music, sharing her work on platforms like YouTube and continuing to perform internationally.

Legacy

Suzi Quatro has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Icon Award from the Women's International Music Network in 2020 and induction into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2011. In 2016, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Anglia Ruskin University. Her life and career were the subject of the documentary "Suzi Q," which premiered in 2019, highlighting her impact on the music industry and her journey as a female artist in a male-dominated field.
