Sylvie Vartan was born on August 15, 1944, in Iskrets, Sofia Province, Bulgaria. Her father, Georges Vartan, was a Frenchman of Armenian descent who worked as an attaché at the French embassy in Sofia, while her mother, Ilona, was of Bulgarian and Hungarian heritage. The family faced hardships during the Soviet occupation of Bulgaria, leading them to emigrate to Paris in December 1952. In Paris, young Sylvie struggled to adapt, learning French and working hard in school. Her passion for music blossomed during her teenage years, influenced by her brother Eddie and her favorite artists like Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee.

Career

Vartan's music career took off in 1961 when she recorded her first hit, "Panne d'essence," which led to her nickname as "la collégienne du twist." She quickly gained popularity, performing at the prestigious Paris Olympia and releasing her first LP, "Sylvie," in 1962. Her international breakthrough came with the song "I'm Watching You," which became a hit in Japan and Korea. Over the years, she released numerous albums, including "Chance," "À Nashville," and "Gift Wrapped from Paris," showcasing her versatility in pop music.
