Formation

The Yardbirds are an iconic English blues rock band formed in London in 1963. The original lineup consisted of vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, guitarist Anthony “Top” Topham, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, drummer Jim McCarty, and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja. The band initially gained attention as the house band at the Crawdaddy Club, succeeding the Rolling Stones, and quickly became a prominent act in the British rhythm and blues scene.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

In October 1963, Topham left the band and was replaced by Eric Clapton, marking the beginning of a series of significant lineup changes. Clapton's tenure lasted until 1965, after which Jeff Beck took over as lead guitarist. The Yardbirds released several influential albums during this period, including "For Your Love" and "Having a Rave Up," which showcased their innovative approach to blues and rock music. In 1966, Jimmy Page joined the group, further solidifying their reputation as a breeding ground for guitar talent. The band continued to evolve, releasing albums like "Little Games" and "Birdland" before disbanding in 1968.

The Yardbirds are credited with shaping the sound of rock music and influencing countless artists. They are known for launching the careers of three of rock's most celebrated guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom are ranked among the greatest guitarists of all time.
