Formation

Vanilla Ninja is an all-female rock band from Tallinn, Estonia, formed in 2002. The original lineup consisted of Maarja Kivi (vocals/bass), Lenna Kuurmaa (vocals/guitar), Katrin Siska (vocals/keyboard), and Piret Järvis (vocals/guitar). The group was produced by Sven Lõhmus, and Kivi's prior participation in Estonia's Eurovision pre-selection contest, Eurolaul, helped the band gain early exposure despite the other members lacking previous national success.

Breakthrough

In 2003, Vanilla Ninja participated in the Estonian ESC preselection, Eurolaul 2003, with their song "Club Kung Fu." Although they were the most popular act in the phone polls, the jury placed them at the bottom of the rankings. Nevertheless, this exposure helped propel their career forward. Their second studio album, "Traces of Sadness," released in 2004, marked a significant breakthrough, reaching the top five in the album charts in Germany and Austria, and achieving gold certification in both countries and platinum in Estonia. The album featured hit singles like "Tough Enough," "Don't Go Too Fast," and "Liar."

Legacy

Over the years, Vanilla Ninja has released several albums, including "Blue Tattoo," "Love Is War," and "Encore," solidifying their presence in the European rock scene. The group has maintained a consistent lineup with Piret Järvis, Lenna Kuurmaa, and Katrin Siska still active since their formation, while Maarja Kivi left in 2004. Their unique blend of hard rock, pop rock, and gothic rock has left a lasting impact on the Estonian music landscape, making them a notable figure in the genre.
