Formation
Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. The duo, long-term partners, initially started a doom metal band called The Portal, which included former members of Westerholt's previous band, The Circle. After renaming themselves to Within Temptation, they recorded their demo, "Enter," which led to a recording contract with DSFA Records.
Breakthrough
The band's debut album, "Enter," was released in 1997 and received positive acclaim, allowing them to embark on their first national tour. The lineup saw some changes early on, with drummer Ivar de Graaf leaving in 2002 and being replaced by Stephen van Haestregt. Their second album, "Mother Earth," released in 2000, marked a significant shift in their musical style, incorporating more melodic and folk influences, which was well-received by critics.
