Deryck Whibley

Early Life

Deryck Jason Whibley, born in Scarborough, Toronto, grew up in a single-parent household. He showed early promise in sports, captaining his basketball team during middle school and making the high school team, although he lost interest in basketball after Michael Jordan's retirement.

Career

Whibley is best known as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and main songwriter of the Canadian rock band Sum 41, which he co-founded in 1996. The band gained international fame with their debut album, "All Killer No Filler," released in 2001, featuring the hit single "Fat Lip," which topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Over the years, Sum 41 has released several successful albums, including "Does This Look Infected?" and "Chuck," with multiple albums certified platinum in Canada. Whibley has also explored his musical versatility by performing as a drummer under the alias Gunner in the band's alter-ego heavy metal project, Pain For Pleasure.

Personal Life

Whibley married fellow musician Avril Lavigne in 2006, and the couple often collaborated musically. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2010 after three years. In 2015, he married model Ariana Cooper, and they have two children together. Whibley has faced health challenges, including chronic back pain from injuries sustained during performances. In 2024, he released a memoir titled "Walking Disaster," detailing his experiences in the music industry, including allegations of abuse by a former manager.
