Jack Bruce

Early Life

John Symon Asher "Jack" Bruce was born on May 14, 1943, in Bishopbriggs, Lanarkshire, Scotland, to musical parents Betty and Charlie Bruce. His family's frequent relocations led him to attend 14 different schools, ultimately finishing at Bellahouston Academy. Bruce's musical journey began in his teens when he started playing jazz bass, earning a scholarship to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied cello and musical composition while performing in Jim McHarg's Scotsville Jazzband to support himself.

Career

Bruce's professional career took off in the early 1960s when he joined the London-based band Blues Incorporated, led by Alexis Korner. He later formed the Graham Bond Quartet, where he transitioned from upright bass to electric bass guitar, developing a unique sound that would define his career. Bruce gained international fame as the primary lead vocalist and bassist of the legendary rock band Cream, which formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. Following Cream's breakup, he embarked on a successful solo career, releasing numerous albums, including "Songs for a Tailor" and "Harmony Row," and collaborating with various artists throughout his life.

Personal Life

In 1964, Bruce married Janet Godfrey, with whom he had two sons, Jonas and Malcolm. Tragically, Jonas passed away in 1997. After their divorce, Bruce married Margrit Seyffer in 1982, and they had two daughters, Natascha and Kyla, and a son, Corin. Bruce's family life was intertwined with his music, as both of his sons pursued careers in music, with Jonas playing keyboards and Malcolm on guitar.
