Macy Gray, born Natalie Renée McIntyre on September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio, grew up in a family that valued education; her mother was a math teacher and her stepfather worked in steel. Despite facing challenges in her early development, including a late start in conversation skills, she began piano lessons at the age of seven. A childhood incident involving a mailbox inspired her to adopt the name "Macy Gray" for her artistic persona.
