Major Lazer

Formation

Major Lazer, a Jamaican-American electronic music group, was formed in 2008 by record producer Diplo and DJ Switch. The duo was introduced while collaborating with M.I.A., and they quickly made a name for themselves in the music scene. Their debut album, "Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do," was released on June 16, 2009, and recorded at the iconic Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica. The album featured a diverse array of guest vocalists, including Santigold and Vybz Kartel, and marked the beginning of their partnership with Downtown Records and Diplo's label, Mad Decent.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

After three successful years, Switch departed from the group in 2011, leading to the addition of Jillionaire and Walshy Fire to the lineup. This new configuration continued to push the boundaries of music, blending genres such as reggae, dancehall, and moombahton. In 2019, Jillionaire left, and Ape Drums joined the group, solidifying the current lineup alongside Diplo and Walshy Fire. The group has released several notable albums, including "Free the Universe," "Peace Is the Mission," and "Music Is the Weapon," showcasing their evolution and influence in the electronic dance music scene.
