Oliver Riedel

Early Life

Oliver "Ollie" Riedel was born on April 11, 1971, in Schwerin, Germany. He enjoyed a relatively harmonious upbringing, thanks to the close age gap between his parents, which fostered good relationships within the family. Despite his struggles in school, Riedel managed to get through with the support of his mother. He was notably shy during his teenage years, often preferring to observe rather than participate in the social activities of his peers.

Career

Riedel's musical journey began in 1992 when he joined a folk/punk band called the Inchtabokatables. That same year, he traveled to the southwestern United States with fellow musicians Richard Kruspe and Till Lindemann. In 1993, he co-founded a new project named Tempelprayers alongside Kruspe and Christoph Schneider. Their big break came in 1994 when they won a recording session in a professional studio after entering the Berlin Senate Metrobeat contest. This project eventually evolved into the iconic band Rammstein, which has become synonymous with the Neue Deutsche Härte genre.

Personal Life

Outside of music, Riedel is a devoted father of two and has a passion for photography and sports, particularly skateboarding and surfing. Standing at an impressive 6 feet 7 inches (2 meters), he is the tallest member of Rammstein. Known for his private nature, Riedel rarely gives interviews and is recognized as the most computer-savvy member of the band. In 2022, he participated in a charitable initiative by auctioning off two of his signature Sandberg basses, with proceeds benefiting aid organizations in Ukraine.
