Sananda Maitreya

Early Life

Sananda Francesco Maitreya, originally named Terence Trent Howard, was born in 1962 in Manhattan, New York. He was raised by his mother, Frances Howard, a gospel singer, and his stepfather, Bishop James Benjamin Darby. Growing up in Florida, Maitreya showed early promise as an athlete, winning the Florida Golden Gloves lightweight championship in 1980. Although he received an offer to attend boxing school in the U.S. Army, he chose to pursue college at the University of Central Florida but left after a year.

Career

Maitreya enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later in West Germany. His military experience was pivotal, as he left the Army in 1983 to fully commit to music. In Germany, he led a band called The Touch, releasing an album that would later be reissued as "Early Works" after his solo success. In 1986, he moved to London, where he signed with CBS Records. His debut album, "Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby," released in 1987, featured hits like "If You Let Me Stay," "Sign Your Name," and the chart-topping "Wishing Well." Maitreya's flamboyant persona and soulful voice quickly garnered attention, and he famously claimed his debut was as significant as The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
