Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. Her name, derived from the Shona name Tendai, means 'to give thanks'. Growing up in a family of educators, with her father having Nigerian ancestry and her mother of German and Scottish descent, Zendaya was encouraged to explore her interests from a young age. She attended Fruitvale Elementary School, where her mother taught, and was known for her energetic personality. At the age of six, she performed in a school play for Black History Month, igniting her passion for the arts. By eight, she joined a hip-hop dance group, Future Shock Oakland, and later explored hula dancing.
