Early Life

Kim Jong-in, known professionally as Kai, was born on January 14, 1994, in Suncheon, South Korea. As the youngest of three siblings, he was encouraged by his father to explore the arts, initially training in Taekwondo and piano before discovering his passion for dance. Inspired by a performance of "The Nutcracker," he began ballet training in third grade and later took up jazz dance. His father played a pivotal role in his artistic journey, which he reflected on in a film featured in Gucci's 2019 series "The Performers." Kai graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2012, setting the stage for his future in entertainment.

Career

Kai's career took off when he won SM Entertainment's Youth Best Contest in 2007, leading to his signing with the company at just thirteen. He was announced as the first member of the boy group EXO in December 2011, making his debut in April 2012. The group quickly rose to fame, and Kai's exceptional dancing skills garnered him recognition as a standout performer. In addition to his work with EXO, he participated in various projects, including the promotional group Younique Unit and the dance group SM The Performance. Kai made his solo debut on November 30, 2020, with his first EP, "KAI (开)," followed by three more EPs: "Peaches," "Rover," and "Wait On Me."
