Early Life

Keri Lynn Hilson was born on December 5, 1982, in Decatur, Georgia, into a middle-class family. Her mother ran a daycare center, while her father was a developer and Army veteran. Growing up, Hilson was inspired by her family's musical background, particularly her father's love for music and singing. By the age of 12, she was determined to pursue a career in music, leading her mother to hire a piano teacher. However, Hilson quickly shifted her focus from piano to singing, showcasing her talent early on. At just 14, she secured a record deal with the girl group D'Signe, although the group disbanded without releasing any music.

Career

Hilson's career took off when she began working as a songwriter and background vocalist for prominent artists like Usher, Ludacris, and Ciara. In 2004, she joined the songwriting-production group The Clutch, which further solidified her presence in the music industry. Her debut album, "In a Perfect World...", released in 2009, showcased her R&B and pop style, featuring themes of relationships and vulnerability. The album was well-received, leading to hits like "The Way I Are" and "Knock You Down". Her follow-up album, "No Boys Allowed", displayed a more assertive tone and diverse musical styles, emphasizing female empowerment.

Activism and Philanthropy

Beyond her music career, Hilson is actively involved in philanthropy. She collaborated with Akon on the charity single "Oh Africa" to support underprivileged youth in Africa and participated in the "We Are the World 25 for Haiti" project to aid earthquake victims. Hilson has also supported various educational initiatives and health campaigns, including the fight against AIDS and the Let's Move! campaign led by First Lady Michelle Obama. Her commitment to social causes reflects her dedication to making a positive impact beyond her musical achievements.
