Early Life

Melanie Adele Martinez was born on April 28, 1995, in Astoria, Queens, to parents of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. At the age of four, her family moved to Baldwin, New York, where she grew up in a traditional Latin household that she described as conservative. This upbringing made her feel shameful about her sexuality, but she later found acceptance within her family. From a young age, Martinez was drawn to the arts, writing poetry in kindergarten and practicing photography and painting. Her emotional nature earned her the nickname "cry baby," which later inspired the character of her debut album.

Career

Martinez's career took off in 2012 when she participated in the third season of the American talent show The Voice, where she impressed judges with her rendition of Britney Spears's "Toxic." After being mentored by Adam Levine, she gained significant recognition and subsequently signed with Atlantic Records. Her debut single, "Dollhouse," was released in 2014 and achieved 2× platinum certification by the RIAA. Following this success, she released her debut EP, also titled "Dollhouse," and continued to develop her unique sound through albums like "Cry Baby," "K–12," and "PORTALS," which showcase her eclectic mix of genres including emo pop, indie pop, and electronica.

Personal Life

In her personal life, Martinez has been open about her bisexuality, a topic she initially felt shame about due to her upbringing. She began dating fellow musician Oliver Tree in 2019, but they amicably split in June 2020. Following Tree's tragic death in 2026, Martinez expressed her heartbreak on social media, highlighting the deep connections she forms with those around her. Her artistry continues to reflect her personal experiences, making her music relatable to many fans.
