Early Life

Colson Baker, known professionally as MGK and formerly as Machine Gun Kelly, was born on April 22, 1990, in Houston, Texas. His upbringing was marked by constant relocation due to his parents' work as Christian missionaries, which took him to places like Egypt, Kenya, and Germany before settling in various parts of the United States. Baker faced significant challenges during his childhood, including bullying and financial struggles after his mother left when he was nine. Despite these hardships, he found solace in music, particularly hip-hop, which he began to explore in the sixth grade, inspired by artists like DMX, Eminem, and Ludacris.

Career

After high school, Baker faced eviction and turned to music as a means of escape. He gained early recognition by winning consecutive battles at Harlem's Apollo Theater, becoming the first rapper to do so. His mixtape "100 Words and Running" was released in 2010, featuring his catchphrase "Lace Up," which would become a hallmark of his career.
