Early Life

Paul Van Haver, known by his stage name Stromae, was born on March 12, 1985, in Brussels, Belgium. He grew up in the Laken district, raised by his Flemish mother, Miranda Van Haver, after his Tutsi father, Pierre Rutare, was tragically killed during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. This loss deeply affected Stromae, who later reflected on his father's absence, stating that he had only seen him about twenty times in his life. Despite the challenges of his upbringing, he found solace in music, forming a rap group with friends during his school years and drawing inspiration from artists like Jacques Brel.

Career

Stromae began his music career in 2000 under the name Opsmaestro, later adopting the name Stromae, an anagram of "maestro". His breakthrough came in 2009 with the hit single "Alors on danse", which topped charts across Europe. His debut album, "Cheese", released in 2010, won the Victoires de la Musique award for Best Dance Album. His second album, "Racine carrée", released in 2013, solidified his status as a major artist, featuring chart-topping singles like "Papaoutai" and "Formidable". Stromae's unique blend of hip-hop and electronic music has earned him numerous accolades, including the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Belgian Act.

Personal Life

Stromae's personal life has been marked by both triumph and struggle. In 2015, he faced anxiety issues related to medication, leading him to step back from the public eye until his 2022 album "Multitude". He married Coralie Barbier in a private ceremony in 2015, and they welcomed their first child in 2018. Despite his Flemish heritage, Stromae identifies as a Francophone and is fluent in English, showcasing his diverse cultural background.
