He was scouted by SM Entertainment while walking down the street in 2007 but declined the offer. Instead, he pursued a degree in Film Studies at Konkuk University, graduating on February 22, 2017, and later enrolled in graduate school at Hanyang Cyber University.

Jin's music career began when he was scouted by Big Hit Entertainment, where he initially auditioned as an actor before becoming a trainee. He debuted as a member of the globally renowned boy band BTS on June 13, 2013.
